The Cardinals acquired Matt Holliday on July 23rd. His first game was the following night.

On July 23rd, the Cardinals were 1.5 games in first place:

I'm not saying that it would have been a forgone conclusion that the Cardinals would have won the division without Holliday.

I'm merely pointing out that they conceivably could have won it without him, especially if they had a manager that put the best players on the field every day starting in April, not July.

Weren't they tied for first on Aug. 1? Hardly a foregone conclusion that they would have won.

Excellent points all. You know what would make your arguments even more persuasive? If you entered your real name and email so everyone could know the wonderful human being that was making them instead of being a big pussy and hiding behind the anonymity of the web.

Although I could probably make an educated guess as to who actually made this comment. Let me put it this way, I'd be willing to bet your fat ass already had the food delivery web site you claimed to be looking for bookmarked long ago.

And for the record, I'm a daywalker. I probably tan better than you do.

Actually, the Cards were already in first place on the day they acquired Holliday, despite all the dumb personnel moves cataloged above that had occurred up to that point.

Also, the offense really started to click prior to getting Holliday. By no coincidence this was when Ludwick and Rasmus started playing every day, and a Schumaker, Rasmus, Pujols, Ludwick 1-4 became a regular occurrence.

My point is that the Cards could have won what turned out to be a weak NL Central and flamed out 3-0 in the NLDS without acquiring Holliday, if only guys like Duncan, Ankiel and Thurston had been sent to the bench permanently sooner than July.

I have to agree with the red-headed stepchild here. Juice might not have done better, but the timing was terrible. #7 deserved one more shot. I was hoping that McGee, who has always looked the more accurate passer, would be able to hit some receivers and pick up blitzes. Obviously that didn't happen. Our predictable-ass playcalling and crappy O-line play are as much to blame as anything. But now we get a pair of teams who won't overpower us on the line, so I fully expect to see more points next week. None of that will improve our tackling ability, however...
